Message about Forgiveness, Peace, and Giving

                                                                                                October 2003

Namaskar and Jai Jinendra,

Last month many followers of Jain faith, here and around the world, observed ‘Paryushana Parva’.  This 8 to 10 day period is time set aside for annual renewal of faith by listening to religious/spiritual discourses, and following a disciplined behavior and conduct.  At the conclusion of this period, the devotees seek forgiveness from each other for any hurt they may have caused through their words, deeds, or thoughts.  This simple yet powerful practice has very practical benefits.  It is liberating.  It allows us to forget the past and move forward.  It solidifies bond amongst families and renews or revives friendships.  With that in mind and in our spirit, we seek your forgiveness and encourage you to think about this practice and follow as much as you can.

We would like to share another thought with you.  Two years ago past September 11 the terror attacks killed and wounded thousands of individuals in this country.  Since that time, thousands more have died or been wounded worldwide because of the war on terror and more terror attacks.  The end does not appear in sight.  In this troubled times it is appropriate to think of our Hindu/Jain faiths as also of other faiths, and reflect on some of their fundamental teaching and message - the powerful message of love, peace, and non-violence.  We encourage you to pray everyday that the leaders and decision makers around the world ponder this very thought and act appropriately to bring about the peace that our world desperately needs.

Finally, as we prepare for the year’s Diwali program we would like to appeal to you to donate and pledge the most you possibly can to support our Temple.  Through your donations to our ‘house of worship,’ you are giving back a portion of what you have received from God. So, please be generous.

                                                                                    Your Board of Trustees

Diwali Celebrations

Temple will celebrate Diwali during the weekend of October 24, 2003.  On Friday, evening we will have children’s program “choti diwali’ starting at 7:00 PM.  On Saturday, we will have Laxmi puja at 7:00 PM, followed by prassad and social time.  On Sunday, we will have a grand function at Okemos High School at 4:30 PM, starting with variety show and ending with dinner.  During all the functions, we will do fund raising for the temple.

Okemos High School is new and well-maintained school, and we are fortunate to have use of its facilities.  We should leave the school as neat as we find it when we arrive, or cleaner.  Please do not leave any trash in the auditorium (napkins, baby food, soiled diapers, etc.).  Okemos High School’s policy is, “No food and drinks in the auditorium.”

In the auditorium, we will save the seats in front for the senior citizens and honored guests.  If you have young children, who may get restless, fidgety or may cry, then we request you to sit by an exit.  If children cry, then please leave the auditorium to attend to them and to calm them.  During the performance, children should not be running around in the auditorium and disturbing the performers and other audiences.

Seating capacity in Okemos High School is 600 ±, so we will be able to serve all promptly

Many people cook and work hard to make the function a success.  We will prepare a list of names of people who have helped in cooking food or donated funds, and we will display it in the dining hall.  Please take time to read the board, and if you know any of these hard working and generous volunteers, then please stop to say thank you to them.

After the dinner, please stay back to help us cleanup and to wrap up.  Thank you.

Temple Additions

We have prepared preliminary concept drawings and cost estimate to extend the temple.  We presented the drawings and the reasons for extension on two occasions.  We will further discuss this issue at several more meetings and occasions.  If you are interested in attending meetings, which will discuss extension, then contact any board member.  If you are concerned about the costs, features, architectural or technical issues, spiritual issues, etc., we would like to hear from you.

When the matter gets final, and we are ready to start the process of preparing the working drawings, and obtaining permits, we will publicize the decision to inform the community.  As they say on radio – stay tuned.

Constitution Committee

We have requested a committee of Satish Udpa, Kunwar Rajendra, Atma Mandrekar, Padu Karna; and Anil Jain to review our temple’s constitution and propose modifications or changes that may help us improve.  We formulated our current constitution in the early nineties.  Since then both our community and the temple has grown considerable amount.  With a prospect of expansion on the horizon and ensuing growth, it is necessary to revisit our constitution to make sure that our rules and by-laws will serve us well in future.

If you see any weakness or vagueness in any of the clauses that need to be changed, please contact the committee.  We will publicize all proposed changes and the reasons behind them as we become aware of them.  To adopt changes, we will follow the procedures spelled out in the constitution.

Priest House

Temple purchased second house for Shastriji and his family.  The house address is 1141 Haslett Road.  It is located west of the temple.  Within few weeks, Shastriji and his family will be able to move in.

We would like to thank Facilities committee lead by Shashikant Joshi, which did all the work to buy the second house.  We also wish to express our gratitude to Minesh Mody, who let go his real-estate commission and who helped us with all matters regarding the purchase and the mortgage.

We are currently carrying $99,000.00 mortgage for the second house.
