September 15, 2002

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that by the time this letter reaches you, we would have fully paid the mortgage of the temple. As of now, our temple is "mortgage free". This is a moment to celebrate, thank and ponder. Celebrate, because I believe this moment is at least as important as was the laying of the foundation stone of the temple. It is a moment to thank the founding members and numerous other volunteers who have devoted a great deal of their time, effort and money to make this temple a reality. Some of the founding members even put their own finances at risk for the sake of the temple. We salute them all and profoundly thank them for their efforts….it is also a moment to ponder about the future of the people in this community who believe in Hindu religion and the future of this temple in particular. I feel confident that our future generation will continue to follow and promote the rich traditions of Hinduism. Our religion has thrived for the last 5000 years all over the world. We can rest assured that whenever, we leave it we will leave this temple in good hands. However, in the short term there are several tasks that need to be completed. The "Navagrahas" are located temporarily and we need to find a permanent spot for them as dictated by our Shastras. We also have a temporary arrangement for "havan " according to the Shastra no temple is complete without a "Yagyashala" we therefore, need a permanent place where Yagya can be performed. Our temple is not only a place for worship but it has also become a place where many social activities take place. As part of our monthly pujas, as well as other pujas we routinely serve prasad. Our devotees have been extremely accommodating in that, they prepare prasad and bring it to the temple from places as far as Grand Rapids. I feel strongly that we need to update our kitchen, bring it up to the code, so that the food can be prepared in the temple itself. Finally, we have been fortunate that our new priest (Suredra Bhardwaj Shastri) has been well received by the community and he has also liked our community. He would very much like his family to join him as soon as possible. While we are working towards this goal, it is apparent that our present priest house will be inadequate for two families. So we urgently need to either increase the present accommodation or look for an alternative one. Some of these issues will be discussed with all of you at the next "town meeting" scheduled for October 6th, following the first Sunday Puja. I urge all of you to make every effort to attend this meeting and also bring any other issues that you might have for discussion. As always, your board is anxious to hear from you and all the members of the board greatly appreciate the support that we have received from the community. For that we say THANK YOU and God Bless you all.

Sincerely,

Ved Gossain

Chairman, Board of trustees .

India Council & Asian Studies Center of MSU presents

INDIA UNVEILED
Slide Presentation by author Robert Arnett

Join us for a an inspiring slide presentation on India by author Robert Arnett, whose book India Unveiled has been acclaimed internationally as one of the most insightful and revealing books written on India by a foreigner in 45 years. It is a heart-warming portrait of the people, landscape, and multi-hued culture of India. Mr. Arnett spent over 20 months in India on five trips. His commentary and stories will have a profound influence on both children and adults; indeed, he recommends that children attend with their parents, for that will have a much greater impact on their acceptance of Indian culture than if they attended alone. India Unveiled, winner of 3 national awards and now in a revised prestige 3rd edition, was purchased by the Government of India for all its Foreign Missions, and was a British Book-of-the-Month Travel Club Selection. See the website http://www.india-unveiled.com for details.

Two dates:

1. Sunday, October 27, 2002 at 4 pm, at Kellogg Center Auditorium, East Lansing. A reception will follow. Admission & parking: free.

6

  1. Monday, October 28, 2002 at 7 pm at East Lansing Public Library. This will give a second date for those who cannot attend on Sunday.

Mr. Arnett will also address the Bala Vihar children's group at the Bharatiya Temple of Lansing at 11 AM on Sunday, October 27. On Monday, he will make presentations at some of the local schools on multiculturalism and values. COMMUNITY RESOURCES DIRECTORY

In the last news letter we reported to you the relationship we have established with the Lansing State Journal (LSJ) staff. To follow up and to highlight the talents of our community members in the media, we would like to develop a resource directory for different subject matters so that LSJ reporters can contact these individuals for their expertise and/or comments for the news and stories reported in the newspaper. A form for developing this

directory will soon be available at the temple. Please help us compile this information. Once developed the directory will be provided to LSJ. Please note that the Temple's role is that of the facilitator only and no more.

National Day of Prayer and remembrance

Wednesday September 11, 2002

To reflect on the tragic events of last September, various events have been planned in the Greater Lansing communities on Wednesday Sept 11, 2002. The Bharatiya Temple of Lansing has participated in the following events:

  1. 12 Noon - Many area churches will peal their bell for 5 minutes. We will carry our Temple bell outside and ring for 5 minutes along with other churches.
  2. 1:00 pm - Inter-religious prayer service was held at St. Mary Cathedral at 219 Seymour Ave in downtown Lansing. As part of this service our priest Shastriji will sing a prayer and this prayer will then be interpreted in English by Dr. Sudhakar Kulkarni
  3. 7:00 pm - Lansing Mayor David Hollister, members of the Commemoration Committee and the public will assemble at the State Capitol steps. Candles will be distributed while Mayor Hollister details the purpose of the Unity in Community Coalition. Mayor Hollister, in a silent march of remembrance will then lead the public to a nearby park at the corner of Michigan and Grand Avenues. Nine members of the religious community will offer prayers. Dr. Raju will offer the Hindu prayer at this event on behalf of the Bharatiya Temple. Mayor Hollister will then dedicate a piece of World Trade Center for a permanent display.

Our main purpose is to inform you of our participation and to appeal to you to attend future events like these. It is very important for our community to participate and be visible at these events.
