Navagrahas (Planetary Murtis)

This set of nine murtis (12" to 18" high) was donated to the Temple in 2001 by Ramaswamy and Leela Mohan. In the center is Surya (Sun). In the front corner of the picture is Chandra (Moon), and clockwise from there are: Kuja or Mangala (Mars), Rahu (northern nodal point of the moon), Sani (Saturn), Ketu (southern nodal point of the moon), Guru or Brhaspati (Jupiter), Budha (Mercury), and Sukra (Venus). As per tradition, no two of them face each other. While navagrahas are usually found in many temples as subordinate deities, there are some temples where they are exclusively worshipped as the main deities. One such is the navagrahas temple on the banks of the river Kshipra in the outskirts of Ujjain, the famous pilgrim center of Saivism in central India. Sometimes we also come across temples built exclusively for only one of the navagrahas such as the temples built for Surya and Sani in many parts of India.
